Partially this can be avoided by staying in hostels. This can be a good compromise between paying full price as individual traveler and sharing the room with 5 or more other people.

Over the years I met several travelers that traveled with Contiki. Since Contiki seems to cater towards the younger market segment it appears as if the tours tend to be more of a party crowed that.
